Dress of the Week: Douglas Hannant

This week our dress comes from designer Douglas Hannant. Danielle, CUE’s Founder and Creative Director, had the pleasure of seeing his 2011 designs in person at the Gabriella New York Bridal Salon (http://www.gabriellanewyork.com/). She marveled at how this designer, in particular, caters to all types of women regardless of style or size.

This week’s gorgeous dress bolsters Hannant’s commitment to creating unique yet traditional gowns. The strapless bodice, empire waist, and mermaid style train are very conventional elements. However, the addition of the beautiful blue embroidery on the bust, skirt and train makes this gown an eye-catching standout. Hannant states, “I really know my customer,”  and poignantly adds, “I didn’t have her when I started. She found me. She is exactly who I wanted her to be.” Well, who is she? “She loves fine things in every facet of her life. She loves luxury. She wants modern, fresh and new, yet it isn’t big news in the sense that she is never going to be wearing the splashiest, trendiest, most overexposed thing of the moment.” We applaud this great designer and look forward to keeping our eye on his style.

{Advice We Love}: If the shoe fits: make a splash with color

Check out the latest article that CUE’s very own Danielle Bobish is featured in! Lorraine DarConte is writing a series of articles featured on examiner.com that discuss the latest trends for brides and that perfect shoe. See what Danielle has to say…

If the shoe fits: make a splash with color

Although finding the perfect wedding dress is a challenge, so is tracking down the perfect pair of shoes to compliment your gown. Should you wear heels or flats—something classic or trendy? “You want to have stylish shoes that compliment that gorgeous dress,” states Danielle Bobish, Founder/Creative Director of New York City-based Curtain Up Events (www.curtainupevents.com). “Going with matching shoes seems like the obvious choice, however, I really enjoy seeing shoes with a shot of color or a nice metallic hue. Maybe,” suggests Bobish, “make your shoes that ‘something blue’!”

According to Erika Phipps, bridal stylist, La Belle Reve Bridal (http://www.labellereve.com/index.php), one of the biggest trends for 2010 is colorful shoes. “If you are wearing a white dress,” says Erika, “then why not add a splash of color to your feet, since you won’t be running the risk of mismatching. Purple or black are the two most popular colors for the wedding season, she notes. However, it’s your day, so choose whatever color you want.” Erika suggests either picking a shoe in your favorite color or perhaps one that matches your bridesmaids’ dresses. “Don’t be afraid to make your feet pop,” she says.

Ariana Gestson, who is a fashion enthusiast and fashion blogger for District Bride Guide, says picking shoes for your big day should be the least stressful and most enjoyable part of organizing your wedding ensemble. “For about 90% of brides, shoes will be hidden under layers and layers of silk and tulle,” she states. “This is why it has become so trendy to wear a statement color shoe under bridal gowns. Not only do brightly colored shoes make women feel sexy, it is also fun to know that under your traditional white dress you are making a fashion statement. While the shoes may be hidden throughout the ceremony,” reiterates Gestson, “they should certainly come out to play for pictures. A bright dash of color against a white dress can look phenomenal in photos.”

Embellishments and accents such as flowers, bows, feathers and bling are another great trend for shoes right now. “These embellishments also add more character to the overall bridal look. Add a bow for a touch of girlish sweetness; feathers for timeless elegance; or gems to show how much of a princess you are,” concludes La Belle’s Erika.
